Scanning, darkly.
Mighty odd, isn't it? For once you're encouraged to flip the lightswitch.
When I watched the film for the first time back in '96, this bit of dialog from Beavis and Butt-head Do America really stuck with me.
Beavis: "How come, like, some stuff sucks, but then, like, some stuff is pretty cool?"
Butt-Head: "Uhhh, well, if nothing sucked, and everything was cool all the time, then, like, how would you know it was cool?"
The fact that Butt-Head drove home his point with bespoke violence is very on brand for B&B, and truth be told I found it highly relatable as someone who was physically abused (bullied) in school. You can say a lot about Mike Judge as a writer and satirist, the guy is sharp!
More than anything I just enjoyed rolling the notion around in my brain-pan that contrast can really be viewed from different angles. Nobody has to give you permission to view things differently, it is just a choice you make (or not). There is definite upside to acknowledging contrast, in many aspects of life. I think it helps us, as Humans, find our balance.
When I began creating this website, thinking about the experience I wanted my visitors to have, it occurred to me that I could easily embrace the concept of choice and "suck" vs. "cool". I decided to go about it in a very simple way: Different imagery for light and dark mode.
Using the Sun/Moon icon in the header, you can freely toggle back and forth on the art pages and the about page to see subtle changes or sometimes even drastic differences in the artwork being displayed. It feels (to me) like a fun way to showcase the versatility of my digital art style/process, while paying homage to my mentors Beavis and Butt-Head. You get to decide which you prefer, and it's OK even if you don't like either version. Win-win!
